Manchester United ‘have to put me on the bench then!’, jokes Paul Pogba being told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer side average more points-per-game WITHOUT him this term – but star says the stat is a ‘good challenge’ to change

  • Man United average 1.9 points-per-game with Paul Pogba in the XI this season
  • When the 28-year-old doesn’t play, the Red Devils average 2.2 points per game
  • He couldn’t affect this stat on Sunday as their game vs Liverpool got postponed

Paul Pogba has joked that Manchester United should drop him from the starting XI after it emerged that the team has performed better without him this season.

Despite his importance to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s side, the Red Devils surprisingly average more points-per-game when Pogba isn’t on the pitch.

According to the figures, the Old Trafford outfit average 2.2 points-per-game compared to 1.9 when Pogba plays.

And that was put to him by French TV network Canal+, the 28-year-old took that in good jest – adding that he hopes he can improve the statistic when he starts.

‘So you have to put me on the bench then!’ he said light-heartedly.

‘I had not seen this statistic. If the team does better without me, I would totally understand that the coach would put me on the bench.

‘It’s a good challenge for me anyway. I hope it turns to the other side. I hope people will win more with me than without me.’

Pogba was unable to turn this tide on Sunday after United’s highly-anticipated clash against bitter rivals Liverpool was postponed.

United fans broke into the stadium and invaded the pitch in protest at club owners the Glazer family, while outside the ground bottles and barriers were thrown at police officers and horses.

The Red Devils were among 12 clubs that last month signed up for the breakaway European Super League, which collapsed within 48 hours due to huge, unrelenting pressure.

Those plans brought anger against the already despised Glazer family to a new level, with fans congregating at both Old Trafford and the Lowry, the team hotel in the city centre, to demand change ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool.

Police said that by late afternoon around 200 protesters had gathered outside the Lowry and over 1,000 at the stadium.

There was an initial unspecified delay to the scheduled 1630 kick-off before confirmation came through from United at 1735 that the match had been postponed ‘due to safety and security considerations around the protest’.
