The devastated proprietor of a $15million mansion destroyed in a ‘suspicious’ fireplace says he’s scratching his head over who could have began the blaze. 

Gerry Hoggard, the boss of constructing firm Sperway Houses, has been left heartbroken after his Toorak house went up in flames about 12.20am on Friday.

Mr Hoggard has already spent tens of millions renovating the mansion, which he purchased for $7.1million in 2021, with three years of laborious work destroyed in simply minutes. 

The renovations marked the primary time the development boss, who has been within the business for over 45 years, has ever constructed a house for himself. 

Mr Hoggard claimed petrol had been poured ‘over each ground and each room’. 

‘I do not know who would have achieved it,’ he informed The Australian.

‘However I can let you know that by the extent of the hearth, and realizing the way it’s constructed, anyone has put accelerant everywhere in the constructing.’

It is understood no person was residing within the property on the unique St Georges Street whereas the renovations had been underway.

The building suffered significant structural collapse due to the intensity of the fire

The constructing suffered important structural collapse as a result of depth of the hearth

Hearth Rescue Victoria (FRV) mentioned the response was escalated after crews arrived to search out smoke and flames coming from the two-storey home.

It took firefighters an hour to convey the blaze underneath management with the constructing sustaining important structural collapse as a result of depth of the hearth. 

The reason for the blaze will likely be investigated by FRV specialists and Victoria Police.

‘Investigations are ongoing into the precise reason behind the hearth, which is believed to be suspicious at this stage,’ police mentioned in a press release on Friday.

‘An arson chemist will attend the scene this morning.’

Mr Hoggard is the proprietor and managing director of Sperway Houses, which has locatons in Sydney and Melbourne, and Extension Manufacturing facility.
