If England don’t play Jadon Sancho, Germany should try and give him a PASSPORT, jokes former World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus… as he insists the overlooked Dortmund star has been one of the best players in the Bundesliga for the last two years
Lothar Matthaus has joked thatshould try and steal Jadon Sancho from England if continues to refuse to play him.
The former World Cup winner was expressing his bafflement at Sancho’s shunning, with thewinger managing just six minutes of Euro 2020 football so far.
Sancho, 21, has fallen far down Southgate’s pecking order, with Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Marcus Rashford andall featuring ahead of him at the tournament.

Matthaus is one of many who is confused by the decision.
‘He was one of the best players in the Bundesliga for the last two years,’ he said.
‘If he is not good enough for England, we would like to give him a German passport.
‘It has surprised many in Germany.’
Sancho is arguably England’s only natural winger, who notched up 16 goals and 20 assists in all competitions for Dortmund last season.

But the 21-year-old appears to have fallen far down Gareth Southgate’s (left) pecking order
His time in Germany is close to ending with Manchester United offering to pay Sancho’s £77million asking price to bring him to Old Trafford.
Matthaus added that England could beat Germany in their round-of-16 clash on Tuesday at Wembley, but not if the game goes to penalties.
‘England have a chance to win – but not with penalty kicks,’ he said.
‘If it goes to penalties, Germany will win, so England have to do it inside 120 minutes.
‘We are always very good with penalties. It’s always a little bit of a joke between the Germans and the English but if it goes to a shootout then we are the favourites. You start to think about what has happened in the last 30 or 40 years. When we played in 1990 and 1996…
Matthaus said England can’t beat Germany on penalties, referring to Euro 96
Matthaus added that Germany should not be fazed by Wembley as they’ve had success there
‘It’s a lot of pressure for the English players because they read every day in the newspapers all the stories about penalties.’
Matthaus also said the Germans should not be fazed by playing England at Wembley with a home crowd because they have had success there in the past.
‘England don’t like to play against Germany but Germany also don’t like to play against England,’ he said.
‘But the players have to be happy to have a big game in Wembley. It doesn’t get any better.
‘Wembley is something magical still and in the last 20 or 30 years we had very good experiences – we won Euro 96 there, Didier Hamann scored the last goal in the old Wembley. We like Wembley.’
