France 2-0 Finland: Antoine Griezmann brace helps end world champions’ five-match winless run as they brush aside group rivals to take charge of World Cup qualifying group

  • France had not triumphed since beating Germany in opening Euro 2020 clash
  • But they cruised to victory in Lyon with Antoine Griezmann in excellent form
  • The forward, 30, struck in both halves in a superb showing against Finland
  • The world champions have now pulled seven points clear in their group

France got back to winning ways in their World Cup qualifying group after two Antoine Griezmann strikes helped them ease past Finland.

The Atletico Madrid forward starred in attack alongside Karim Benzema, netting in each half to seal a comfortable victory in the Group D encounter in Lyon.

After ending a five-match run without victory, Didier Deschamps’ team are now seven points clear at the top of their group, albeit having played a game more than nearest challengers Ukraine.

Finland, who had a decent opening half, are third on five points but have two games in hand of the French.

While the visitors were never expected to keep up the pressure on France by taking more points off them, they did have an opportunity to close to within a point of them, with two games in hand.

They had hope too, especially with the home side missing key forward Kylian Mbappe who pulled out of the squad through injury.

But Griezmann formed a lethal and slick partnership along with Benzema, with credible support acts also being played by Manchester United duo Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

Griezmann’s two goals saw him go level with Michel Platini with 41 strikes for France, with only Olivier Giroud and Thierry Henry having netted more.

At times France were unplayable with some excellent moves on the ball. On another night in Lyon they could have scored many more than their two.

The first of those came in the 25th minute. Griezmann found Benzema from the edge of the area whose return flick allowed the Atletico Madrid forward to fire home an excellent finish with the outside of his right boot.

Eight minutes after half-time and Griezmann found the net again.

Benzema was involved with a ball for Leo Dubois on the right hand side, whose ball for Griezmann saw the 30-year-old take a heavy touch before recovering to score from a tight angle.

Bosnia are fourth on three points from four games after a 2-2 draw with bottom side Kazakhstan, who also have three points. Ukraine are second on five points from as many matches.
