Family and friends of Lily van de Putte gather to mourn the loss of ‘sassy’ and ‘beautiful’ Buxton crash victim English Headline

Devastated community members have gathered to mourn a “beautiful spirit” who lost her life during a horror crash in Buxton, New South Wales, earlier this month.

Lily van de Putte was one of five teenagers who were passengers when a Nissan Navara ute smashed into a tree on September 6, killing everyone but the 18-year-old P-plate driver Tyrell Edwards.

The 15-year-old was described as a “ray of light” during her funeral which took place at St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Tahmoor on Friday afternoon.

Lily’s casket, decorated with pink flamingos and topped with a large bouquet of flowers, was wheeled into the church, with the song ‘Forever Young’ playing in the background.

Her father John, her brother and other close family members wore Hawaiian shirts emblazoned with pink flamingos which matched her casket.

The funeral notice described Lily as a “beloved daughter of John & Melanie” and “sassy sister to Kaleb and Britany”.

“Lily’s beautiful spirit and soul will transcend time and the ray of light she shone each day will now shine down through the stars,” a memorial card said.

In an emotional Facebook post, Lily’s 24-year-old sister Britany said she “never thought there would be a time that you weren’t here”.

“The world will never be the same without you, I’m going to miss your sassy comments, your beautiful smile, how courageous you are, the way you made me laugh,” she said.

“My favourite times have been spent with you, by my side. Holding my hand. Always having my back. I wanted to be someone you looked up to, I’m sorry I wasn’t around for you. I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you from the world.

“You are so brave, kind, selfless. You achieved so much, made everyone’s day just that little bit better. I’m sorry for always embarrassing you, but that’s just what older sisters do.”

Friday’s vigil was the second funeral to be held this week for the five teenagers who died in the horror car crash.

Friends and family of Tyrese Bechard, who died alongside Lily, Antonio Desisto, 15, Summer Williams, 14 and Gabby McLennon, 14, mourned his life on Thursday.

The service was filled with tears as family and friends played a slideshow featuring videos and photos of Tyrese living his care-free life.
