Medibank’s chairman and chief executive have defended the company’s decision to not pay the $15 million dollar ransom to the hackers who stole customer data, telling shareholders paying the ransom could make things worse.

“Based on extensive advice from cyber crime experts we formed the view that there was limited chance paying a ransom would ensure the return of our customers’ data and prevent it from being published,” said Medibank Chairman Mike Wilkins.

He also said the advice from cyber crime experts notes that paying the ransom could encourage direct extortion of Medibank customers and further criminal activity.

“It’s for these reasons that we could not pay.”
