A 65-year-old man died early Sunday after a shooting involving a Round Rock police officer, officials said.

The incident occurred at a residence in the 3000 block of Bradford Park Drive, when officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at about 12:15 a.m., according to Round Rock Assistant Police Chief Justin Carmichael.

After determining that the female caller who reported the domestic disturbance and a 1-year-old baby were able to exit the residence safely, officers were leaving the scene when they heard a gunshot from inside, Carmichael said.

The officers started to return to the residence when the man exited the back porch, pointed a weapon and fired a shot, Carmichael said.

A Round Rock police sergeant fired once, he said, and the man “was later determined to be deceased.”

No officers were injured during the incident. Carmichael said the police sergeant who discharged their weapon will be placed on administrative leave, in compliance with Round Rock Police Department policy.

“Our thoughts are with all involved in this incident,” he said. “Any loss of life is tragic.

Carmichael said the department is continuing to investigate the incident, with assistance from the the Texas Rangers and the Williamson County district attorney’s office.

Additional details of the shooting have not been released.

Prior to the shooting, the officers who responded to the report of the domestic disturbance, which the caller said was physical, had determined it to be a Class C misdemeanor, Carmichael said.
