ANZ HSBC Chief Economist Paul Bloxham says the RBA has got “mandates” to get inflation back to two to three per cent and in order to do that, they need to keep wages growth from picking up too much.

“What they don’t want though is it to lift to five, six and seven, and if it gets there, then they’re gonna have to lift interest rates even more aggressively,” Mr Bloxham said.

“They are probably then going to have to deliver a bigger economic downturn.”
