A report into the destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters in Western Australia has been tabled as the government promises new laws to protect Indigenous heritage sites just two years after Rio Tinto blew up the gorge.

“The previous government sat on this report and didn’t respond,” Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney said.

“The difference you see here today is this government responding and putting self-determination at the forefront of what we’re doing.”
