A tourist in Bali is lucky to be alive after he fell 40 metres from a cliff while attempting a dangerous pose for a photo.

The man had been posing for photos at the edge of the cliff at Broken Beach on the popular island of Nusa Penida on Monday, local news site Detik Bali reported.

For his final photo, he reportedly attempted a somersault but failed, falling off the cliff and onto the beach below, a police report states.

Unverified video circulating on social media shows a man wearing just shorts clutching his leg in pain on the sand as he is repeatedly soaked by waves. It is unclear if he landed on rocks or the sand.

“Wow, imagine the pain he must be in right now,” one person commented on the video.

A local tour guide who had taken the Vietnamese tourist to the site had been asked to take the photos of the traveller. Police have called on other witnesses at the site to come forward with any information regarding the fall.

Rescuers struggled to reach injured tourist

Broken Beach is near Kelingking Beach, a wildly-popular tourist hotspot where people flock to to take photos from the trail at the top of the cliff.

Emergency services struggled to reach the man due to rough and steep terrain, while access was limited from the water due to the weather conditions.

“We gave initial treatment to reduce bleeding from leg and hand injuries. The victim was successfully pulled up using a stretcher,” local police chief Gede Darmada explained in a statement.

An image of the scene on Detik Bali shows a rescue worker applying a brace to the man’s leg.

The man was then taken by ambulance to a nearby medical clinic before being taken to hospital on Bali’s mainland with a serious leg injury.
