NDIS Minister Bill Shorten says there needs to be increased regulation in disability homes amid a report revealing more than 7,000 serious abuse incident reports within group homes were reported in the past four years.
He said we need resources for people with communication difficulties to “understand” their rights and inform authorities “what’s going on”.
“We need to have a new standard or code of practice which governs how these facilities run so it does reflect the concerns of people with disability and their families,” Mr Shorten told Englishheadline Australia.
“There’s a lot of great people working in these facilities but there are some who are not doing the right thing, so we absolutely need to improve the training and professionalisation of the workforce.”
