A father aged in his sixties has died after a suspected snake bite in Queensland.

It’s believed a brown snake bit his hand at a private property at Kensington Grove, 70km west of Brisbane, just before 10am on Saturday.

The man was in a critical condition when paramedics arrived but he later died. Police are not treating the death as suspicious and will prepare a report for the coroner.

A neighbour told the Courier Mail four ambulances rushed to the home in an attempt to save the man’s life.

“Someone told me they could hear his wife screaming through the fence for help before ambulances got there,” she said.

The neighbour said she had seen a venomous eastern brown snake in her own yard days earlier.

“I just quickly got my dog inside and then it started moving on toward (his) yard, so I let the lady in the granny flat behind me know,” she said. “I was shocked by how fast it moved.”

She said it appeared the attack took place between the house and the shed in the backyard.

Snake season is well upon the state, with Sunshine Coast Snake Catcher Stuart McKenzie on Friday warning snakes are on the rise.

“Baby snakes are starting to appear and be on the move so please keep an eye out for them at your homes and businesses,” he said online.
