One man has died while another was taken to hospital following a boating incident in Bundaberg, regional Queensland.
Queensland Police confirmed two people had been thrown from a boat into the Burnett River, near Strathdees Boat Ramp at around 10.40am on Tuesday.
Paramedics raced to the area where an 85-year-old man from Windermere had suffered “critical” injuries and later died at the scene.
The driver of the boat, an 82-year-old man from Gooburrum had sustained a cut to his arm and was taken to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.
“One patient was transported to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition with an arm laceration after a boating incident in #Rubyamma,” Queensland Ambulance wrote at 12.30pm on Tuesday.
It is understood no other boat was involved in the incident.
“Initial information indicates around 10.40am, two people were thrown from a boat into the Burnett River near Strathdees boat ramp, Rubyanna,” police wrote in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.
“An 85-year-old Windermere man suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.”
According to 9 News, the 85-year-old who died had suffered a cardiac arrest after going into the water.
9 News said bystanders were able to pick the man up and perform CPR on him until paramedics arrived, however he later died at the scene.
“The passers-by performed CPR on the first gentleman, they took him to a nearby boat club where an (automated external defibrillator) was located and used, however, he did pass away at the scene,” Nigel Jones from Queensland Ambulance Service said.
Water Police are investigating the fatal tragedy, with assistance from Maritime Safety Queensland as it’s not yet known how the boat turned.
