The baby girl critically injured in a horrific car crash that killed her mother and two-year-old brother has died two days after the incident in Sydney’s southwest.
Three-month-old Ivy Prahastono was miraculously pulled from the wreckage of the Mazda SUV following its collision with a cement truck on the Hume Highway in Menangle Park on Monday morning.
While her 34-year-old mum Katrina Sila and older brother Kai Prahastono died at the scene, the little girl was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition. Tragically she lost her fight for life on Wednesday morning.
Father facing ‘enormous personal tragedy’
Relatives of the family say Ms Sila’s husband and the father of the children, Ian Prahastono, had been by Ivy’s bedside as he struggled with the loss of his wife and son, the Daily Telegraph reported.
“Ivy is critically in need of care,” a family spokesperson had said before her death. “We ask everyone to say a prayer for her recovery.”
“We are all heartbroken.. Kat was a beloved mother, wife, sister, friend.”
The extended family went on to ask everyone to keep Mr Prahastono in their thoughts as he navigates such an “enormous personal tragedy”.
Mother was ‘doing a U-turn’ when they were hit
The mother and children had been about 30 kilometres from their Denham Court home when the car slammed into the truck at around 11.20am on Monday.
Witnesses said the family’s car appeared to be doing a U-turn through an emergency bay between the north and southbound lanes when it was struck, the Daily Telegraph reported.
The 48-year-old driver was not injured in the crash.
Police from Campbelltown City Area Command are investigating the circumstances that led up to the crash and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
“As inquiries continue, investigators urged anyone with dashcam vision in the area at the time, or anyone with further information to come forward,” New South Wales Police said.
A report will also be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
