The government has been forced by “Chinese belligerence” to make strategic decisions and increase influence in the Indo-Pacific region, says former Labor advisor Stephen Conroy.

Mr Conroy’s comments come as a response to former prime minister Paul Keating’s criticisms of AUKUS on Wednesday.

“I would just say to Paul Keating, why don’t you talk about what China’s been doing,” he told Englishheadline Australia.

“You’re a man of great courage normally, why don’t you talk about China on those things.”
