Update: ASU basketball announced Tuesday that Bobby Hurley had agreed to a contract extension through the 2026 season.
Previous speculation about Bobby Hurley: There is an opening a Providence for a new head coach after Ed Cooley departed for Georgetown on Monday.
An interesting name is included in speculation for the job: Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley.
Several media members linked Hurley to Providence as a possible candidate after news broke of the coaching vacancy.
Chatter has swirled around Hurley’s future at ASU for months. He only has one year remaining on his contract in Tempe.
Would Hurley be a good fit at Providence? Would he leave Arizona State?

247 Sports: Bobby Hurley ‘serious candidate’ for Providence job
Cameron Salerno writes: “Hurley appears to be a serious candidate for the open job at Providence. With Cooley departing to Georgetown, the Friars need to hire a replacement. Hurley is someone who grew up on the East Coast and previously spent time as the head coach at Buffalo from 2013-15 before heading west to Arizona State. Hurley has been the head coach in Tempe since but the opportunity to come back east could be tempting.”
GoLocalProv.com: Bobby Hurley ‘in the mix’ for Providence job
It writes: “The Wall Street Journal in 2019 priced the PC program as the 56th most valuable program in Division I basketball — at $46 million. With the departure of Cooley, the pressure is on PC administration to find a top-tier coach to fill the gap. With former PC coach Rick Pitino going to St. John’s, the number of names that would satisfy the Friar faithful is limited.”

247 Sports: Bobby Hurley ‘ideal candidate’ for Providence job
It writes: “Hurley will surely get consideration for the job at Providence. His East Coast roots and success at Arizona State make him an ideal candidate for the job. In eight seasons at Arizona State, he has a 141-113 overall record and guided the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances. This season, Arizona State finished with 23 wins, which tied the most in the Hurley era at Arizona State.”
Local Today: Bobby Hurley could use ASU’s season as ‘springboard’ for Providence
Rory Murphy writes: “A 23-win season has taken some of the pressure off at Tempe, but maybe Hurley will use that as a springboard and return to the East Coast after eight seasons. Also: Danny Hurley vs. Bobby Hurley at least twice a year? Yes, please.”

CBS Sports: Would Bobby Hurley leave ASU to coach against his brother at Providence?
Matt Norlander writes: “The Friars have top-three facilities in the Big East and arguably a top-three fan base as well. Names that have been connected to this gig in the 24-plus hours since it came open include Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley (leave ASU to coach against his brother? Not sure on that), George Mason coach Kim English and Yale coach James Jones.”
