The death penalty is “barbaric” and is something the Australian government should be opposing “in all circumstances”, says Human Rights Watch Asia Division Director Elaine Pearson.

“No one, Vietnamese or Australian should be sentenced to death,” she told Englishheadline Australia.

Ms Pearson’s statements come after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced two Australian citizens on death row in Vietnam would be granted clemency.

“It’s very encouraging that the Australian Prime Minister has raised these cases and that the Vietnamese government has acted,” Ms Pearson said.
