Chaos is unfolding at Melbourne CBD where a car has allegedly run over several pedestrians.

Victoria Police said a vehicle allegedly hit several pedestrians before colliding with two vehicles on the corner of Russell and Bourke Street about 6pm.

“The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and is in custody,” police said in a statement.

One person is believed to be dead and many more injured.

Shocking footage of the incident has emerged on social media and shows a number of people injured on the ground while concerned people gather around.

A white Ford Falcon and white Kia were seen smashed in the three-vehicle crash.

Police have closed off Bourke Street from Swanston Street through to Exhibition Street.

“There is no ongoing threat to the community, and we will provide more information when available,” police said.
