Types of life support

When most people talk about someone on life support, they’re generally referring to a ventilator, which is a machine that helps people breathe.

A ventilator pushes air into the lungs to maintain oxygen circulating throughout the body.

It is used momentarily for illnesses such as pneumonia, but it may be required for a longer period of time for someone with lung failure, according to WebMD.

One end of a tube is inserted into the windpipe via the nose or mouth.

The other end is connected to the electric pump. While on a breathing machine, some individuals are given medication to make them more comfortable and asleep.
