Greens Housing Spokesperson Max Chandler-Mather says the Labor government had the power to freeze and cap rent increases but “refused” to do so.

The Albanese government struck a deal with the Greens on their Housing Australian Future Fund on Monday.

Mr Chandler-Mather criticised the government for their unwillingness to address the issues of renters in Australia.

“Our frustration, of course, is that we haven’t been able to convince Labor to care about the one-third of this country who rents,” Mr Chandler-Mather told Englishheadline Australia.

“The lesson they are going to have to learn now from here up until the next election – every time someone’s rent goes up, that’s on the Prime Minister and the Labor Party.”
