Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Birmingham has delivered a federal warning to Peter Malinauskas as the SA Premier heads off to China.
Mr Birmingham cautioned all state premiers to “be appropriately briefed” on all national security sensitivities before striking certain trade deals.
“The ultimate issues of the trade sanctions that China has put in place, they will be resolved by national governments – they are not something that different premiers are going to make much of a difference to,” he told Englishheadline Australia.
“It is entirely in the realm of premiers to go and undertake trade promotion, investment promotion and those types of exercises to try to get investment dollars to their states.
“As a promotional exercise, that is something premiers have long done and no doubt will long do into the future.”
