The UK government has revealed 80 prison officers did not attend their expected shift the day a terror suspect escaped.

Former soldier Daniel Abed escaped from a London prison strapped under a food delivery truck last Wednesday.

The government says despite the absent officers, overall staffing levels were still above the minimum requirement.

They maintain the numbers were not behind the security breach.

The absentee officers make up 40 per cent of the staff meant to be on shift.
