‘No pride in genocide’ Model Jesinta Franklin snubs Australia Day as she recognises it as a ‘day of mourning’ for Indigenous people in emotional post

Model Jesinta Franklin has thrown her support behind the campaign to ‘change the date’ of Australia Day

In a stunning Instagram post on Tuesday, the 29-year-old branded the national holiday a ‘day of mourning’ before going on to say ‘there is no pride in genocide’.

The former David Jones ambassador, who is married to Indigenous AFL star Buddy Franklin, started by saying the land will always belong to the Aboriginal people.

‘Always was, always will be,’ Jesinta wrote repeating the activist slogan while sharing a photo of Buddy taking a dip in the water.

The pregnant glamazon continued: ‘Today I pay my respects and stand in solidarity with the Traditional owners of this land, on this day of mourning.

She went on to say the date should be abolished before saying there was ‘no pride in genocide’.

‘It’s time to abolish the date and as a country acknowledge that today is not the day to be celebrating. There is no pride in genocide.’

Next to her photo was a picture of Buddy taking a swim at the beach.

Last year, the mother-of-one famously penned an emotional column for Stellar magazine where she revealed why she refused to celebrate Australia Day on January 26.

‘I have seen my husband well up when talking about his mum and how she used to have to run away with her siblings when they knew the government trucks were coming to take them away from their parents,’ she wrote.

The star was referring to the stolen generation, where Aboriginal children were forcibly removed from their communities due to various government policies.

It was hearing painful stories from her husband’s family which had a big impact on Jesinta, making her realise the importance of changing the date.

‘While I had read and learnt about the horrors of Australia’s past, it wasn’t until I listened to the pain endured from someone close to me that I began to deeply feel the importance of changing the date.’

She added that his sisters had shared stories of their grandparents, who were ‘born into a world that considered them flora and fauna.’

Jesinta finished by saying that the date needs to be moved to one which ‘all Aussies feel celebrated’, and to a date which: ‘Doesn’t hold so much hurt for so many people.’
