Kyle Sandilands brought to tears over emotional story of Fiji residents waving to a plane filled with tourists flying in for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic

Kyle Sandilands has shed a tear over an emotional story read about Fiji residents waving to tourists on Thursday’s Kyle and Jackie O’ Show.

The KIIS radio shock jock and his co-host Jackie O’ Henderson were listening to the headlines from newsreader Brooklyn Ross before the Fiji story struck a chord with Sandilands.

The story was about Fijian residents waving to the first flight of tourists to land in the island country in almost two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Struck a chord: Kyle Sandilands has been brought to tears over emotional story of Fiji residents waving to planes of tourists flying in for the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic

‘Oh they were waving on the beach … I’ve got all upset about that,’ Kyle, 50, told Jackie and Brooklyn.

‘I don’t know why. Why am I crying over the Fijians?’ he continued.

Ross and Henderson noted that Fiji would’ve suffered during the pandemic as the country’s economy relies heavily on international tourism.

‘I heard Brooklyn say they were all lined up on the beach waving and screaming ‘Bula’ and I just burst into tears,’ Kyle admitted.

Bula in Fijian means ‘life’ but the word is also a common greeting for ‘hello’.

Jackie O’ said she noticed Kyle weeping and was taken aback by his emotional response.

‘It was a bit over the top I got to say,’ she replied.

‘And I love Fiji more than anyone and I love the Fijian people more than anyone, but I don’t think I would cry over that story. You were in tears.’

The first plane full of tourists to Nadi, Fiji flew in from Sydney on Wednesday.

The travellers were warmly greeted by dancers in grass skirts at the airport and local residents.

Fiji has had it’s borders closed since March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The country is heavily dependent on tourism dollars, with international tourism accounting for around 40 percent of the local economy.

Fiji is expected to welcome up to 75,000 tourists over the holiday period, most of whom will be from Australia.
