‘You’ll grow old forever as a coward’: Brother of a young dad ‘senselessly gunned down’ in a road rage attack 12 years ago breaks down as he calls for the killer to come forward

  • Omega Ruston, 32, was shot dead on the side of a Gold Coast highway in 2009
  • The father-of-two was fatally wounded in a suspected road rage incident
  • His family and police have now launched fresh appeal for answers 12 years later
  • Omega’s brother Nick said killer is a ‘coward’ and it’s time to ‘right your wrongs’

The brother of a young father ‘senselessly gunned down’ in a suspected road rage attack 12 years ago has made an emotional plea as he joins forces with police to search for answers.

Father-of-two Omega Ruston was shot dead on the side of the Gold Coast Highway at Burleigh Heads, on the Gold Coast, at about 10.25pm on Australia Day, 2009.

The 32-year-old construction worker was behind the wheel of his white 2001 Holden Rodeo ute and travelling with two friends when he pulled over following a traffic incident with another car.

He was gunned down after exiting his vehicle with one of his passengers to talk to a group of men who had stopped behind him in a small maroon sedan.

Two shots were fired from the rear passenger seat, one of them fatally wounding Omega, in what police describe as a random attack.

His brother Nick told a press conference on Monday that Omega was ‘senselessly gunned down on the side of the road’ by a ‘coward’.

‘His children have had to grow up without their father being part of their lives and our family have had to carry on with the knowledge that his killer remains at large,’ he said.

‘We know that there are people out there that have information. If you’re remaining silent out of some sense of allegiance or loyalty, please know that the man you’re protecting is a coward.

‘To the man that shot Omega, the opportunity to right your wrongs does not come around often. You may have been scared or held some misplaced sense of hatred in your heart but what’s done is done and you now need to make amends.’

Nick said the killer’s actions took the life of an innocent man who merely wanted to return home to his family following a day of celebrations.

‘My brother will not grow old, but you’ll grow old forever as a coward. Do the right thing and turn yourself in before it’s too late,’ he said.

On Monday, detectives said the gunman and his companions were believed to have links to crime and bikie gangs.

‘We believe they were linked to Gold Coast and Sydney chapters of organised crime syndicates, and outlaw motorcycle gangs,’ Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn told reporters.

He said the people the men turned to for help after the slaying were also believed to have links to those gangs.

‘(They) are being investigated as accessories after the fact to murder, which is a life imprisonment offence in Queensland.’

Det Insp Ahearn has launched a multi-state appeal for new information saying loyalties change and new witnesses have been identified on the Gold Coast, Sydney and elsewhere.

‘We are seeking assistance from anyone who is or was a member, associate, family member, or spouse of an outlaw motorcycle gang member linked to this shooting.

‘Relationships and loyalties change. People who were once scared may now no longer be. We would encourage these persons to come forward. This may be their chance at redemption.’
