Politician Pete Buttigieg and his husband Chasten announced their baby boy Gus is finally home after spending ‘a terrifying week on a ventilator.’

The couple announced on Friday their son Gus – whose legal name is Joseph August – was finally home after three weeks in and out of the hospital.

‘After 3 weeks in and out of hospitals, 125 miles in an ambulance, and a terrifying week on a ventilator, Gus is home, smiling, and doing great!’ Chasten, 32, wrote.

‘We’re so relieved, thankful, and excited for him and Penelope to take DC by storm! Thank you so much for all of the love and prayers.’

The Secretary of Transportation Pete, 39, added on Twitter: ‘Thankful, relieved, and reflecting a great deal on the mixture of joy, terror, and love that is parenting.’

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg, 39 and 32, announced their son was home sweet home after spending three weeks in and out of the hospital with an undisclosed illness and spent a week on a ventilator

On Sunday, the pair shared a few pictures of their twins dressed as cute little traffic cones with the caption: ‘Happy Halloween from these #twinfrastructure safety advocates!’

‘Gus has been having a rough go of it but we’re headed in the right direction,” Chasten Buttigieg wrote on Instagram.

The couple did not give any details about their son’s illness, but thanked the ‘countless medical professionals’ who helped their son with ‘tenderness and care.’

Baby Gus was named after Buttigieg’s father who died in 2019 and was a professor at Notre Dame.

The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and the drama teacher went through the ups and downs of the adoption cycle before getting their twins.

‘It’s a really weird cycle of anger and frustration and hope,’ Chasten told the Washington Post

Chasten recalled around the year mark receiving a phone call regarding a woman in labor who was considering adoption. They pair scrambled to figure out how to get there and adjust their lives for an incoming baby when the mother changed her mind.

‘You think it’s finally happening and you get so excited, and then it’s gone,’ he told the Post.

Pete and Chasten welcomed their twins home in September.

The couple met in 2015 on the dating app Hinge and married three years later, according to the Guardian

The Transportation boss has been criticized for taking extended paternity leave amid the nation’s supply chain crisis.

‘Pete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child. Paternity leave, they call it, trying to figure out how to breastfeed. No word on how that went,’ Fox News’ Tucker Carlson complained.

Buttigieg defended his need to take time off.

‘As you might imagine, we’re bottle feeding and doing it at all hours of the day and night,’ Buttigieg told Jake Tapper in a segment for CNN. ‘I’m not going to apologize to Tucker Carlson or anyone else for taking care of my premature newborn infant twins. The work that we are doing is joyful, fulfilling, wonderful work. It’s important work.’
