The former TOWIE star took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce Blended, as network for families meshed together by ‘a break up, fostering, adopting, loss’ or other circumstances, following her own experiences as a step-parent.

She detailed the difficulties she faced when she became step-mother to her husband Rio’s kids, Lorenz, 15, Tate, 13, and Tia, 10, and how their family has been made complete by her biological son Cree.

In her candid post, Kate spoke about becoming a step-mother after the tragedy of Rio losing his wife and the kids losing their mother Rebecca Ellison, who passed away in 2015, two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

‘As my journey continues I’ve realised there is a real need for a place to connect & get advice from people going through similar experiences. I am definitely not a guru, this is as much for me and it is for you guys…

‘So here we have it @blended a safe space for us to all share our blended family experiences and support each other along this journey…

‘I’m hoping to share some personal experiences along the way as well as help and advice from professionals. There will also also be lots of discussions, general chit chat & quotes to make us feel better. Lots of love Kate’.

Beneath the post, Rio penned: ‘So Proud of my Lady. Warms my heart seeing you so passionate about this. You are a blessing’.

‘Becoming part of a blended family whether it through a break up, fostering, adopting, loss etc brings so much happiness & joy but it can be extremely difficult & emotional when trying to navigate a new unknown territory…

This is not Kate’s first venture into highlighting the ups and downs of blending parenthood, following her 2020 documentary Rio and Kate: Becoming a Step Family.

The documentary won widespread critical acclaim, with viewers left ‘in bits’ as they watched Rio’s children weep at their mother’s grave while laying down flowers and cards on Mother’s Day.

In a heartbreaking scene, Tia broke down as she places flowers and balloons on her mother’s grave – and is comforted by her stepmother Kate.

Rio also lost his mother Janice to cancer, just two years after the death of his wife.

He admitted: ‘You don’t expect to lose someone so important to you so soon after losing someone else. It’s not in the script. How do you tell the kids that? Their hearts are broken all over again. They’re grieving twice on Mother’s Day.’

In the emotional documentary, Kate revealed she writes letters to Rebecca and spoke candidly about her struggles with becoming a stepmother to his children as they come to terms with their mother’s death.
