Prue Leith has revealed she once had an affair with ‘a wonderful man’ after visiting Lanzarote to see a friend in 2010 – yet ended the romance soon after.

Speaking on Annie Mac’s Changes podcast, The GBBO judge, 81, said she ‘had a lot of good times’ with her former love Earnest but she couldn’t live with him since he had bipolar disorder and later met her now-husband John Playfai .

Only weeks before their meeting, she had drunkenly told a group of friends at a dinner party she was looking for ‘someone Jewish, in his 70s, a musician and gay’ and in meeting Earnest, he ticked most of the desired boxes, although was not gay.

Having a blast: Prue Leith has revealed she once had an affair with ‘a wonderful man’ after visiting Lanzarote to visit a friend in 2010

Speaking candidly on the podcast, Prue, who has been married to her second husband John since 2016, said: ‘I fell in love with him and he was a pianist. There was the musician. He was only one quarter Jewish but the genes are very strong…

‘He loved music and food and he was in his 70s. And thank god he wasn’t gay! Because I discovered that I still quite liked all that. We had four years together – it was a real rollercoaster. A lot of is was wonderful…

‘We were trying to build a concert hall in Lanzarote where he had a house. We had a lot of good times together. He was Bipolar which meant that every now and then he would be absolutely impossible…

‘I am still friends with him but I couldn’t have lived with him.’

Speaking about how her hunt for love began, she detailed attending a dinner party as a single woman, saying: ‘I went to a dinner party and I met a bunch of people and it was quite funny as when you are a single woman a) you don’t get invited to many dinner parties and if you do there are probably two other single women there…

‘Some friend is being really nice with the friends she ought to have to dinner. You find yourself at dinner and if you are sitting next to a man, it is probably someone else’s husband whose wife is in hospital…

‘Or it is somebody who is single for a very good reason, like he is awful. So… I was having fun. I’d had a few drinks.

‘The three women, we were all single and we were all talking about how we preferred to be single. And I was saying I wouldn’t want a husband because it was so nice not having crumbs in the bed and apologise for my train being late…

‘Or feel guilty about not having made the supper on time because my husband was a great one for having everything on time.

One of the other women piped up and said: ‘There are advantages to a guy, what would be lovely to have someone to carry the bags and take the rubbish out and go to the cinema with and do nothing with.’

She went on: ‘The three of us were agreeing we wanted a walker I got a bit full of booze and said very specifically…. ‘I want someone who is Jewish, in his 70s, a musician and gay,’ those four things.’

It was then she explained that she started her ill-fated affair, yet went on to admit she was glad she left because she met fashion designer John Playfair a year later, with whom she tied the knot in 2016 after five years together.

She cheekily added: ‘If I’d been with Earnest, I’d never have been able to hook up with John.’

In the past, Prue has regularly spoken about her relationship with John and previously candidly discussed their sex life.

During a Loose Women interview, the cook shared details while discussing the recent finding that millennials are having less sex. She was asked by Saira Khan about the recent finding, and replied with a giggle, ‘Try it, it’s quite nice.’

While in an interview with The Sun, she said: ‘Older people think that’s rather romantic and charming. Younger people think, “Good Lord, are they really still at it?”‘

She added: ‘It will sound a rather pompous thing to say but it’s quite healthy that older women like me are not just expected to sit in a corner and knit.’

Prue started her career at the Cordon Bleu Cookery School in 1960 and went on to open her Michelin starred restaurant Leith’s nine years later.

After becoming a food columnist she turned her talents to writing cookery books and was a successful novelist, she now judges The Great British Bake Off.

Prue is mother to son, Danny, and adopted daughter, Li-Da with Rayne.
