Rebecca Maddern quit Channel Nine after rejecting a ‘lower pay deal’ to reflect the fact she was stepping down from Weekend Today in 2022

New claims have surfaced about Rebecca Maddern’s departure from Channel Nine.

She is believed to have walked away following lengthy contract negotiations, with reports alleging Maddern and Nine were ‘unable to agree to terms on a new deal’.

In a further development, the Herald Sun reported on Monday that Maddern, 44, parted ways with Nine after being offered a ‘lower pay deal’ to reflect the fact she was stepping down from Weekend Today in 2022.

Leaving Weekend Today would have meant her duties at Nine would be limited to Australian Ninja Warrior and hosting tennis coverage, including the Australian Open.

Maddern, who was apparently on a six-figure salary, is said to have rejected the offer.

Channel Nine declined to comment.

Last week, Maddern confirmed she had walked away from Nine after almost six years at the network.

Nine said in a statement: ‘Bec has been a great contributor to Nine since she joined us and we wish her well for the future.’

The mother of one joined Nine in 2016 after almost 15 years at Channel Seven.

Her first major role was as the co-host of the AFL Footy Show, before joining Australian Ninja Warrior in 2017.

The Melbourne-born journalist’s career went from strength to strength in the following years, as she was chosen to host Nine’s tennis coverage in 2018 before becoming the co-host of Weekend Today in 2019.

She welcomed her first child, a daughter named Ruby, in 2018, and has spoken of setting a good example for the youngster as a working mum.

‘What’s nice about her being three now though is that she might just be old enough to watch a little bit of Australian Ninja Warrior,’ she told Who magazine in June.

‘This will be the first year I can show her the series, so I’m really excited,’ she added.

She also previously discussed working with co-host Ben Fordham, who stepped away from Ninja Warrior in October to focus on his duties at 2GB.

‘He’s one of my TV husbands, alongside Richard Wilkins!’ Maddern said.

‘I didn’t know Ben when we started on the show together in 2017,’ she said, adding that hosting Ninja Warrior pushed them both out of their comfort zones.

With Maddern out at Nine and Ben Fordham exiting his role as co-host of Ninja Warrior earlier this year, the show will be looking for two new hosts.

Shane Crawford will remain as the show’s on-the-ground reporter interviewing contestants before and after they take on the course.
