Roger Federer PULLS OUT of the French Open due to fitness concerns and tells fans ‘it’s important that I listen to my body’ less than 24 hours after defeating Dominik Koepfer

  • Roger Federer, 39, has withdrawn from the French Open in the fourth round
  • On Saturday night the Swiss pulled off victory over German Dominik Koepfer
  • He then hinted that it may be more beneficial for his body if he was to exit
  • The announcement came on Sunday prior to his match with Matteo Berrettini

Roger Federer today decided to save himself for the grass courts and Wimbledon by pulling out of tomorrow’s French Open fourth round.

The 39 year-old Swiss, having been scheduled for Saturday night’s late session, completed his four set win over German Dominik Koepfer at 12.43am.

He hinted afterwards that, with his appearance at the ATP event in Halle coming up next week, he would be better off scratching from his last sixteen meeting with Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Federer duly did so this afternoon, knowing that he has a much better chance of success on the grass than on clay.

It could be that his last appearance in Paris turns out to be a winning one in front of an empty stadium, due to the current curfew in the French capital.

‘After discussions with my team, I’ve decided I will need to pull out of Roland-Garros today,’ he said.

‘After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure I don’t push myself too quickly on my road to recovery. I am thrilled to have got 3 matches under my belt.

‘There is no greater feeling than being back on court.’

An official tournament statement read: ‘The Roland-Garros tournament is sorry about the withdrawal of Roger Federer, who put up an incredible fight last night.

‘We were all delighted to see Roger back in Paris, where he played three high-level matches.

‘We wish him all the best for the rest of the season,’ said Guy Forget, Tournament Director.’
