Communications Minister Paul Fletcher says the inquiry into social media companies is a “chance to hear from parents and families” from around Australia about the problems they have had with the tech giants when it comes to online safety.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced he would set up an inquiry to look into the ‘toxic impact’ of social media.

Mr Morrison has established a parliamentary committee, chaired by NSW Liberal MP Lucy Wicks, which will work over the next few months and report back by February.

“This will be a chance to hear from parents and families around Australia about issues of concern to them in regards to online safety,” Mr Fletcher told Sky News host Chris Smith.

“And indeed, to identify, look at the things that we’ve already done, see if more needs to be done, and look at issues like the algorithms.

“I mean do the algorithms feed news to people, including particularly children and teenagers, which keep them going down an even more harmful rabbit hole.”
