Sunrise sports presenter Mark Beretta reveals his biggest regret about his family life

He’s the sports presenter for Channel Seven’s flagship breakfast program Sunrise.

And Mark Beretta has now revealed his biggest regret about his career in television and sports commentary.

The 55-year-old told New Idea he misses out on ‘family time in the morning’ because of his early starts.

In hindsight, he wishes he’d spent more quality time at home with his children when they were younger.

‘When the kids were little, they went to bed early and all the lights were off in our house by 7pm. But now they are staying up later and sleeping in, and you’re missing that family time in the morning,’ he said.

‘Looking back, you think, I would have loved to spend more time at home, but life is what it is and you make the most of it.’

Despite this, Beretta has ‘no complaints’ about his job and is ‘very grateful’ to be in the position he’s in because it has given his family ‘extraordinary benefits’.

Mark shares two children, Ava, 17, and Daniel, 14, with his wife, Rachel.

When asked what Ava and Daniel think of seeing their father on TV, Mark said they ‘take it all in their stride’.

He said they initially thought it was ‘dorky’ before realising it’s ‘not so bad’ – especially when he was able to take them both to the Sydney Opera House to see Katy Perry perform live

Mark has bonded with his teenage children in recent years after they developed an interest in his lifelong passion for motorsports.

Routine: 'When the kids were little, they went to bed early and all the lights were off in our house by 7pm. But now they are staying up later and sleeping in, and you're missing that family time in the morning,' Mark told New Idea

‘We go to the track quite a bit and they really enjoy it,’ Mark said, adding: ‘Not quite to the same extent as me, but they’ve got the bug.’

Ava and Daniel will almost certainly be watching their father report from Mount Panorama during the Repco Bathurst 1000 race.

Mark has been with Seven since the mid-1990s, rising through the ranks as a respected sports commentator.

He is now the sports presenter for Sunrise, alongside co-hosts David Koch and Natalie Barr, weatherman Sam Mac and newsreader Edwina Bartholomew.
