Terrifying moment surfer sees a SHARK right behind him off of Puerto Rico and desperately paddles back to the beach

  • Shark was filmed swimming close to panicked surfer Rolando Montes yesterday
  • Rough waters appeared to throw the animal around slightly in the water
  • Montes was seen paddling away from the shark on his surfboard
  • Jorge Benitez filmed the encounter while visiting Middles Beach, Puerto Rico

This is the terrifying moment a panicked surfer saw a shark thrashing around right behind him before desperately paddling back to the beach in Puerto Rico.

Video footage captured at Middles Beach yesterday showed the predator being thrown around by the rough waters just yards from Rolando Montes.

In the clip, the shark’s tail trashes about in the air as the animal, swimming near the water’s surface, is thrown about.

Surfer Rolando Montes, lying on his surfboard, desperately paddles towards shore at Middles Beach, Puerto Rico, yesterday after a shark was spotted swimming close behind him

Meanwhile, in front of him, Montes can be seen frantically paddling away from the shark, desperately trying to reach the safety of the beach.

A second surfer could also be seen in the footage, as they lay on their front on their surfboard, as if directing their friend away from the animal.

Jorge Benitez filmed the shocking encounter yesterday while visiting Middles Beach with his friend – who was the man attempting to flee from the shark.

Describing the close call, Benitez said that shark sightings in the area are not common at all, which explains his reaction in recording the incident.

The shark was seen being thrown around by the waves, before its top fin menacingly jutted out of the water behind Montes as he tried to reach safety

Benitez said: ‘This is the first shark I see. Although it’s known they are around the areas, but apparently they have enough food so we barely have incidents if any.’

Shark attacks in the waters around Puerto Rico are extremely rare, with reports suggesting the last known incident took place in 2011 – and was non-fatal.

In fact, data on shark attacks in the area show that there have only been a total of 16 – both fatal and non-fatal – since 1900.

Despite this, around 40 different kind of shark has been found near the island.
