Elise Christie’s Olympic curse looks set to continue after she cast major doubt on her appearance at Beijing 2022.

The former speed skating world champion has been pushing to qualify for another crack at the Winter Olympics after suffering high-profile setbacks at each of the past two Games.

However, after a series of underwhelming qualifying results across the past six weeks, which followed her recovery from a significant ankle injury, the 31-year-old appears resigned to missing out on making the cut.

In captioning a picture of herself in tears, Christie posted on Twitter: ‘There’s a lot to say, but for now… this photo speaks what I cannot say. The ankle injury I sustained set me back too far.

‘My heart is shattered. So much love to all my supporters and fans. I’ll be back soon.’

British Ice Skating didn’t elaborate on whether Christie’s fate was officially finalised with the team still awaiting clarity on how many places they will have at the Games, which begin in February.

However, Christie, a triple world champion in 2017, failed to make the semi-finals in any short-track discipline at the four World Cup events used to determine qualification.

The situation extends her difficult relationship with the Olympics, where injury and disqualifications wrecked her three-pronged bid for gold in 2018.

She also received death threats from fans of a rival after a crash at Sochi 2014.
